Questo fatto ha molta importanza in quanto ci porta a prestare fede alla tradizione, che ci asserisce che il Casato Rossi discende da una famiglia di antica origine romano-italica che, in epoca non tanto lontana, venne a stabilirsi nel Trentino. Rubeis deriva dal sostantivo latino (Robur) che, significa (forte),attributo che tutti si dovrebbero acquistare ma che 'e necessario a colui che comanda un gruppo di soldatesche, che hanno il compito di combattere contro il malvagio e l'oppressore e per difendere la Patria dalle insidie del nemico E' dal sostantivo (Robur) (forte) che derivo' il cognome di (Rubeis), cosi chiamato un antenato della stirpe Rossi che comandava un esercito da lui allestito, con stemma proprio, pronto a mettersi al servizio del debole, o anche del Ducato minacciato da un rivale piu' forte. Non si puo' ben preciso se l'abituale dimora del Capitano di ventura de Rubeis fosse a Parma o a Firenze. La tradizione pero' pende piu' per Firenze, dato anche che ivi il nostro grande Macchiavelli col suo (Principe) proponent di sostituire alle milizie mercenarie un eserito cittadino. E fu appunto quando i Medici, signori di quella citta', assecondando il consiglio del Macchiavelli, non ebbero piu' bisogno di milizie mercenarie per difendere il proprio ducato, che il Capitano de Rubeis, essendo anche avanzato in eta', licenziati tutti i suoi addetti, si ritiro' a vita privata. Volendo appartarsi dal chiassoso mondo, scelse come nuova dimora il Trentino, e si stabili' nella Valle di Non, nel paese di Revo', lontano dalle malizie umane, in mezzo alle bellezze di una natura lussureggiante e varia, nella solitudine alpestre, occupare dilettevole di agricoltura, in compagnia dei buoni contadini, trascorrendo ivi con la famiglia i suoi ultimi anni di vita. Siamo verso la fine del secolo XVI. Si hanno notizie certe del casato Rossi ( che ora chiamero' solo con questo cognome) verso la meta' del secolo XVII. "Stemma del casato Rossi" Il 9 luglio dell'anno 1649, con decreto imperiale di Vienna, l'imperatore Ferdinando III concedeva a Giovanni Battista e Giovanni Maria Rossi, ai loro figli, posterita e discendenti d'ambo i sessi all'infinito, di venire assunti al numero, ceto, consorzio, stato, grado, dignita' dei nobili del Sacro Romano Impero e delle Provincie ereditarie di Casa d'Austria (Manci - Matricola Nob. Trig. Vol. II pag. 346 ) Il privilegio fu ancorare e rinnovato dal Principe Vescovo Domenico Antonio Thun, a Giovanni Pietro e Domenico Daniele Rossi (discendenti dai sunnominati Giovanni Battista e Giovanni Maria) ai loro figli di ambo i sessi, nati e nascituro. (Decreto del Castello del Buon Consiglio di Trento.) Il casato Rossi fu sempre benestante, onorato e caritatevole. Parecchi suoi membri, sentendo viva la fede di Cristo, abbracciarono lo stato sacerdotale. Merita di essere ricordato in modo speciale e con senso di venerazione: GIAN ANTONIO Rossi Nato a Revo' il 6 ottobre 1658 da Giovanni Rossi ed Anna Maria, assimilo' ancor giovane il culto alla religione e l'amore al bene che i genitori andavano infondendogli. Cresciuto, divenne un uomo assai caritatevole, ottimo cristiano e cittadino incensurabile, lasciando di se' larga eredita' di affetti. Gia' avanzato in eta', colto da malattia che lo tenne per qualche tempo a letto, prima che fosse rapito all'affetto di quanti lo circondavano, disponeva il 7 maggio 1717, con storyamento, di tutti i suoi beni. Gian Antonio nel suo atto storyamentario stabil¨ e volle che con tutte le sue laute sostanze venisse eretto un beneficio, e cosi' si sprimeva: Comando venga eretto un beneficio del capitale di ragnesi tremila, sotto ponendo, a tale scopo li fondi arativi e vigna ti, siti a Revo', loco detto S. Stefano e Maurini, un vigna to arativo e altro fondo nel tenere di Romallo, coll obbligo di celebrare tre Messe settimanali nella chiesa di S. Maria. Questo lascito, detto beneficio ecclesiastico semplice, venne canonico eretto con atto di fondazione il 19 aprile 1754, sul quale spetta il diritto di patronato, sia attivo che passivo, ai discendenti maschi dei fratelli: Tomaso, Aliprando, Bortolomeo, e Andrea Rossi ( Decreto del Principe Vescovo Giovanni Giacobbe della Bona del 7 aprile 1881. N.956-199 Benef.) Il beneficio venne consecutivamente assegnato a molti Chierici e Sacerdoti ai quali spetta per diritto, finche' nel 1909 venne conferito a don Olivio Rossi. Nel 1912 per mezzo di intrighi e in vista di un effimero apparente interesse e per l'erata adesione e appoggio di Giuliani don Giovanni, allora parroco di Rev•, vennero venduti tutti gli stabili del beneficio e col ricavato furono formati valori di banca. Ora, lasciando da parte i discendenti di Bortolameo, Andrea e Aliprando fratelli di Gian Antonio Rossi fondatore del Beneficio, mi occupero' solo dei discendenti di Tomaso Rossi. Di grande fama per il suo sapere e la sua affabilita', per cui ancora oggi si parla di lui con grande stima, fu Tomaso Rossi nato nell'anno 1808. Giovane vivace e di felice intelligenza, gia' nell'anno 1827, a soli 19 anni, era maestro assistente di Revo'. Maestro stimato, amato e benvoluto dagli alunni, educo' nel paese natio fino a tutto l'anno 1846. Nella vita fu uomo integerrimo, buon cittadino, specialmente affabile col popolo, al quale cercava di dare tutto quell'aiuto che era in suo potere. Erudito in materia legale, quanti per mezzo suo non riuscirono a rimanere illesi nei lor giusti e legali diritti? Non c'era questione in cui si trovasse impegnato qualche contadino del paese, che Tomaso non venisse interpellare per avere consiglio e sempre con frutto. Moriva vecchio, nell'anno 1879, compianto da quanti lo conoscevano, lasciando un figlio, Domenico. Ereditato dal padre un vasto patrimonio di compagno, Domenico ancora in verde eta' si uni' in matrimonio con la giovane Lucia Flaim. Onesta ragazza, proveniente da famiglia sentita cristiana, aveva uno zio Sacerdote e un fratello Cappuccino, dei quali mi pare opportuno fare un accenno. Flaim Don Cristforo nato a Revo' il 6 agosto 1820, compli' gli studi ginnasta e liceale a Trento e quelli universitari a Innsbruck. Fu cooperatore a Vipiteno e Rovereto, indi professore di latino e greco al ginnasio liceo di Trento dall'anno 1869 al 1882. Mori' a Trento il 22 aprile 1883. (Annuario Regio Liceo Ginnasio dell'anno 1882-83.) Padre Flaim Don Illuminato nato a Revo' nel 1843, senti ancora giovane, viva e forte, la vocazione al sacerdozio. Volendo dedicarsi interamente al Signore, abbraccio' lo stato religioso entrare nell'Ordine dei Frati Cappucini, dove rimase per 16 anni regola a tal punto, da portarlo a un alto grado di santita'. Lascio' questa terra, per andare a ricevere il premio di sue grandi virtu', il 5 gennaio dell'anno 1878. * * * Dai coniugi DOmenico Rossi e Lucia Flaim nacque un'eletta schiera di figli, al primo dei quali venne imposto il nome di Domenico - Tomaso - Illuminato e del quale solo, mi occupero'. Domenico vissuto molto in compagnia del nonno Tomaso, sebbene ancora giovane, assimilo' i suoi saggi insegnamenti e venne educato ai nobili sentimenti di religione e patria che lo guidarono per tutta la sua vita. Per la sua sagacia e stima che godeva presso tutte le autorita' e compaesani, venne nominato il febbraio 1909, con decreto del R. Giudizio Distrettuale di Cles, perito giudiziale del Comune di Revo' e suo circondario, carica che copri' fino alla sua morte. (Archivio R. Giudizio Distrettuale Cles 10-2-1909.) Domenico trascorse una vita semplice, priva di fatti rilevanti, ma che di nulla si puo' censurare. E' degno invece di molta lode per la grande modestia con le quale nascondeva i nobili sentimenti dei suoi antenati, che fecero di lui il padre amato, l'ottimo cittadino, il bravo lavortore. Domenico Rossi ammogliato con la giovane Maria Angeli di Cloz, rivelo' subito le sue grandi doti di ottimo padre. Tutto dedito alla famiglia, cerco' di dare ai figli quell'educazione religioso patriottica che spetta a ciascuno, cercando di favorirli nei loro ideali e tendenze. La prole fu numerosa e quattro furono i figli: Luigi, Angelo, Silvio ed Ermanno e due furono le figlie, Lucia e Onorina. Nella loro sconfinata bonta' di genitori, sia il babbo che la mamma, si prodigarono verso tutti i figli con grandi premure, ma prescelta fu la cura e la predilezione per il figlio letto Silvio, che sara' quello, come vedremo in seguito, che loro portera' la maggior consolazione, il maggior conforto per sopportare gli affanni della vita. _______________________________________________________ Padre Rossi Don SILVIO *** Please note accent marks may not be exact ***

Kinsella Family History as told by Aunt Mary Kinsella (Aunt to Mary Kinsella Rossi as on the Rossi family pedigree chart) My father's name was Michael Kinsella. His grandparents belonged to the North and South of Ireland. They had to leave their homes as British Soldiers came and took their farms from them, so as they moved out, they could only take what was on theirs backs and nothing more. The father forgot to take something he needed and he went back to get it. When he came out the door the British shot him dead. His wife and children tried to go back for him but were told the same thing would happen to them if they tried. They had to leave him, hoping someone would bury him. The mother was left with 12 children (11 Boys and 1 Girl). They had to go to England to live because there was no work in Ireland. While there, they got along so well they were able to open their own business, a bar. My own father, Michael, was a migration thresher and he also went to the gold fields to work then he came home to England and started his own business. It was a bar in Duke Street, Barrowfurness. He then had a iling vessel to take workmen to the Mercy shipyard and also went back and forth to Belfast where he put the building forms up for the workman's dock in the shipyard. He also put in the steps of Frazer Street where the Bangor trains went through. I have lived to see them come down. He ferried people across the Mersey river. He was also a navigator. His brother James had a business too. His work was building and contracting. He built a house in John Street and he called all the streets after the family. His brother John was at college to go on to the priesthood, but in his last year he failed his exams so he met his wife and they had a son who died before he was one year old. Their daughter Margaret married an english, she had twin girls. She was taken ill suddenly and died, but before she died she made a will and the house was left to her husband along with a sum of money, but said if he married everything would go back to the children. The children were sent to the Poor Claire convent as they took it very hard when their father remarried. Her husband then went back to his own church. Margaret's grandson Rev. F. Mooney and he is the only one left. My sisters were Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret, Eveline, Jinnie myself and brother John. I am the only one left and you are all I have. I wish you all well, God Bless you. My mother's name was Mary Bradley (your grandmother). Her people belonged to the Market district. It was only a country village then with white washed houses. All the time they lived there they had nothing but trouble as it is today.

The McNamara Family I. James McNamara (Carpenter), of Artikelly, parish of Aghanloo, county Derry, married and had, -- 1. Charles, (laborer) b 1845, m.12 May 1867, Bridget (Servant) daughter. Of James Kearny (laborer) of Limavady, by whom he had [1] James, b. 27 Nov 1867, Carbullion, Aghanloo; [2] Charles baptized. 29-Aug-1869, Ballycastle, Aghanloo. 2. Daniel b 1846 of whom presently. II. Daniel, (laborer) of Artikelly, b 1846 the second son of James McNamara of Artikelly m. 17-Nov-1867, Rose Anne Lagan, (servant), daughter. Of John Lagan (laborer), and his wife Mary Anne of Myroe, parish of Tamlaught Finlagan, barony of Keenaught, county Derry. According to an extract of the 1851 census of Ireland (Ref. T550/25, P.R.O.N.I), John Lagan and his wife who were married in 1831, were living at the number 1A in the townland of Maine North, in the parish of Balteagh, and their daughter, Rose Anne was six years of age in that year. Daniel who died 24-June-1904, and Rose Anne died 12-Aug. -1914, had the following children, 1. James baptized 9-Mar-1872, Ballycastle Aghanloo. (Ref. MIC 1D 56/N1603 P.R.O.N.I) 2. William B. 12-Apr-1877, Ballyclose, Limavady living at 41 Sheriff St. Belfast 1909 of whom presently. 3. Matilda Jane b. 27-Apr-1879 Ballyclose Limavady m. between 1 January and 21 March 1902, James McLaughl in of Limavady, and resided at 14 Rockville St. Belfast, were she died 8-Apr-1959. (See McLauglin Family) 4. Daniel b. 1881 (laborer) living at 25 Sheriff St. Belfast, 1913- 5. Charles b. 1883, self-employed as a Watchmaker and Jewelry Repairman in Limvady, were he died unmarried. 6. Henry b. 1885, m. Matilda McLaughlin of Limvady, a sister of the above James, of whom presently 7. Ellen, b. 1887 m. Mr. Piper and resided at Malcolmson Street Belfast. 8. Rose, married a Mr. Joseph McDonnell, and resided at Nansen St., Belfast, before moving to Coventry England. 9. Mary, married Vincent Bradford and resided at 23 Spinner St., from 1946. It would appear that her husband Vincent died in 1976, and Mary is last recorded at the above address in 1987 when the residents of this area were relocated due to future development. III. William (Grandfather of Mary Kinsella - See Rossi family pedigree chart) b. 12-Apr-1877, Ballyclose St., Limavady; the second son of Daniel McNamara and Rosanne Lagan; moved to Belfast where he married Florence Campbell and resided at 41 Sheriff St. from 1909 to 1953. Served for a time with the British Army and was stationed for a period at the Curragh, County Kildare, before the formation of the Irish Free State and withdrawal of British troops. He is later said to have served for a time with the Irish Free State Army and was later employed as a Blacksmith in the Belfast shipyard of Harlan and Wolff, where it is said he forged the hands which now adorn the Albert Clock, a well known Belfast landmark. It was whilst employed in the shipyard that William was involved in an accident while working on a lathe, a piece of metal flew off resulting in the loss of his eye. William died 15-Apr-1953 aged 76, at Belfast City Hospital, leaving the following children; 1. Norah b. 1901 m. 1927 John Beattie of Altcar St. Belfast who was a member of the Republican Movement. Before their marriage, John and Joseph "Gunner" Walsh who was later married to Norah's sister Florence (Mother of Mary Kinsella - See Rossi family pedigree chart), were involved in a raid on the Kitchen Bar, Victoria Square, in early 1920's to help fund the activities of the Republican movement Unknown to them, an informer had alerted the British, and when John and Gunner entered the bar, they were met by a squad of armed detectives; without hesitation, John and Gunner opened fire wounding a number of the R.I.C. men, but were eventually overpowered and forced to surrender. John Beattie was sentenced to eighteen lashes of the cat, and seven years in Maistone prison in England. Joseph "Gunner" Walsh was deported. On Johns release he and Norah were married and settled at 36 Kitchener Street, in the village of Donegall Road. They subsequently moved in 1935 to 36 Beechmont Cresent where, Norah who died 27-Sept-1972 and John d. 27-Apr-197 had the following children: [1] Rose b. 11-Jun-1928, m. Edward Chambers, and residing at 51 Bingnian Dr., 1992; [2] John, b. 14-Sept-1936, m. Norah Donnelly of Fort St., and residing at 12 Mica Drive 1992; [3] William(Liam), b.5-April-1940, m. 29-June-1960, Josephine Mc Kenna of Merrion St., and residing at 36 Beechmont Cresent, 1992; [4] Norah b. 1942; m. Thomas Baxter, and residing at 30 Ashgrove Pk., Cliftonville 1992; [5] Clifford b. 1945 m. Margaret McGivern of Lurgan, 1992. 2. Charles, employed by the Irish News before going to England where he lived for many years and was employed in a Cold Store. One night in entering one of the freezer rooms, the door locked behind him trapping him inside. When Charles was found the next morning he was rushed to the hospital where he died. It is said that on being admitted to the hospital and not wishing to cause his family and distress, he gave false name and it took the police some time to positively identify him and notify his family in Belfast, Charles died unmarried. 3. Florence Emily (Mother of Mary Kinsella - See Rossi family pedigree chart). B. 12-Nov-1906 m. (1) Joseph "Gunner" Walsh, a native of Letterkenny, county Donegal. Joseph, a chef by trade, served for a number of years in the British Army with the Royal Irish Rifles, and on leaving the army joined the IRA He was eventually arrested for his involvement in the raid on the Kitchen Bar, and deported by the British to the USA, where he settled at 155 Hudson Ave., Englewood New Jersey. During his enforced stay in America he became involved in the bootlegging operations of the Mafia during the prohibition period of the 1920's; and on one occasion while driving a truck load of contraband alcohol, and having consumed more that a reasonable amount of whiskey, Joseph approached a level crossing at a railroad track, crashed through the barrier, and his truck was struck on the track , was hit by an oncoming train. In the rescue operation which followed, Joseph's leg was amputated in order to free him from the wreckage. It is said that he was conscious during the operation but due to the amount of alcohol consumed he felt no pain. In 1928 Joseph forwarded the fare for his wife Florence to join him in America, and in that year she applied to the American Consulate in Belfast for a visa. This visa was granted in 12/1928, describing her as being 5'5" of fair complexion brown hair and blue eyed. Having a change of mind and unwilling to leave her mother, Florence never made the journey; and eventually Joseph, whom the british no longer considered a threat was permitted to return to Belfast, where he and Florence settled at 59 Seaforde St., and raised a family. Joseph, who suffered from severe pain the rest of his life, and was proscribed morphine for relief died, 1941, leaving Florence and the following children; - [1] George b. 1934; d1936 aged eighteen months [2] Elizabeth b. 1937, emigrated to America where she married a Mr. Anderson of Swedish descent, and is now a Unersity lecturer in New York; One son named Eric. [3] Michael b. 1938 killed in an accident at the age of six when he was struck by a bus; [4] George, b. 6-May-1939 m. 15-May-1971, Una Anderson of Vulcan Street (See Anderson Family); [5] Florence b. 1943; six weeks after her brother Michael was killed, Florence then age three, was giving some money to an old blind beggar in the street when he fumbled the money which fell into the road, and Florence, in attempting to retrieve it, was knocked down and killed by a car reversing out of a gateway; A year after the death of her first husband, Florence was married for the second time to John Kinsella (Father of Mary Kinsella - See Rossi family pedigree chart also see Kinsella family history)of Lowry St., who was employed as a laborer by the Belfast Gas Works. Florence who died Easter Sunday 1975 aged 69 had a further six children by John who died 1976;- [1] Mary b. 6-May-1943 (See Rossi family pedigree chart), living in New York 1992; Having Two children John Foster b. 24-Nov-1961 and Jeaninne Lenore b. 28-Jan-1963. m. Richard Rossi. [2] John b. 1946: when just one year old, he as sitting in his pram when he was stabbed repeatedly on the head with a toy metal dagger by a neighbors child, from which he took convulsions and died, 1947; [3] Philomena, b.31-May-1946 living in Clandeboye Gardens, Short Strand, 1992; [4] Florence, b. 1-Aug-1947, living in New Mexico USA 1992; Having three children Alice, James and Burt. m. James Gressing. Grandchild Ashley. [5] Patrick, b. 17-Mar-1950, living Madrid Street., 1992 [6] Joan, b. 8-Mar-1949 m. John Curly, and living at 43 Dunmore St. Belfast 1992. 4. Henry, b. 11/1912 of whom presently 5. Philomena, emigrated to the USA where she married an American serviceman, and living in California 1992 - Two children - Florence and Clifford. Husband Clifford Thompson. 6. Ellen, had a daughter Norah, to an American serviceman serving in Belfast during WWII, who was reared by her aunt Florence; her mother Ellen married another serviceman and emigrated to the USA. Norah later married in Belfast, emigrated to the US where she subsequently divorced an is living in Canada 1992. Two children Joseph and Eileen. 7. Rose, m. John Mullan and resided at 1 highbury Gardens, Ardoyne, Belfast. Rose, being the only daughter left at home an not wishing to leave her mother alone, kept company with John for twenty-five to thirty years before marrying late in life. Rose died 27-June-1978, and John 15-Aug-1991, without issue. 8. William (Liam), A talented artist and writer of short stories which he sold for a mere pittance to other people, who made more money from them than he did. A fluent Gaelic speaker and political activist, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment for possession of seditious literature, and a few months after his release he was re-arrested and interned for five more years in Crumlin Road jail. In prison he was the editor of An Ciomheadohir (The Watcher), a weekly news sheet produced by the internees, and was also noted for his portraits of the inmates, and one of his paintings of the Mona Lisa was reproduced in a competition run by the Northern Whig newspaper. He is also said to have been responsible for the painting of the murals which adorned the walls of the old Ard Scoil, in Divis Street. Although very astute and intelligent, he was a free spirit, bitten by the wander lust and traveled extensively throughout Ireland and England, unable to settle in any one place. Of a regious nature, he had a fascination for the supernatural and terrified the neighbors of Short Strand with stories and accounts of the occult. He was last heard of in 1969 when he stayed with his sister Rose in Ardoyne when the people of this area where being burned out of their homes at the beginning of the present "troubles", but finding things not to his liking he returned to England and was never heard of again. IV. Henry b. 11/1912, the third son of William McNamara and Florence Campbell;a taxi driver, he m. 1933 Annie O'Neill (stitcher), daughter. Of Michael Oneill and Margaret Boyce of Seaforde St. On a summers day in 1933 Annie Oneill, who was then engaged to James Armour, set out on her annual holiday to her aunt who lived in Dundalk. Unknown to her parents, or anyone else, she and Henry made their way to St. Bridget's Church in Derryvolgie Ave., where they were married, before continuing her journey to Dundalk. On her return, her mother, helping her to unpack, discovered the marriage certificate in one of her suitcases, and all hell broke loose, with the Oneill, McNamara, and Armour families, berating and haranguing each other much to the delight and entertainment of the neighbors of the Short Strand, who had gathered to watch the show. Henry and Annie eventually settled at 3 Sheriff St., where he died 26-Jan-1969 aged 56 and by his wife Annie who died 23-Dec-1974 aged 60 he had the following children:- 1. Maria b. 1937, employed by the Gallaghers tobacco factory of York St., m. Samuel Napier a builder, and residing at 15 Mountford Drive in the Short Strand are of Belfast with her children [1]. Briege, b. m. Colm Dornan, and living at Mountford Cresent and has, Caroline, Stacey and Marie; [2]. Terence Henry, m. Mary Crewe, and has Terence, John, Kevin, and Eamonn; [3]. Anne, m. Daniel Samuel, and Leona, all living at Vulcan Court 1992; [4]. Marie [5]. Samuel m. 20-Jun-1992 Catherine Devlin of Anderson St., Belfast, and has Steven, all living Vulcan Court 1992 V. Michael, b. 28-Aug-1948, the only son of Henry McNamara and Annie Oneill, m 16-Jun-1970, Rita (stitcher) b. 15-Jul-1946, daughter. Of Robert Callaghan and Rose Shields of 12 Crawford Street Belfast. An electrician by trade, Michael was employed by Signs and Services, a Neon sign company. He was subsequently employed as a taxi driver by Fonacab of Great Victoria St., and is presently employed by VIP Taxis of Lisburn Rd., Belfast. Michael and his wife reside at 14 Balfour Ave. until 1983 when they moved to their present address 18 Kinallen Court, Ormeau Road Belfast; by his wife Rita he has the following children 1. Roisin b. 14-Aug-1972, educated at St. Monica's Ravenhill Rd., and lately employed as a sales assistant by Texaco of Glengormly, until birth of her son Eamonn McNamara, 21-Sept-1988. 2. Maura b. 28-Feb-1978, presently attending St. Joseph College, Ravenhill Road.
